France, May 21, 1940. The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) struck south across the neck of the German spearhead that had reached so far into France. Surprised by this ferocious British counterattack south of Arras, German forces stopped and then retreated. The heavily-armored Matilda I and II tanks of the 7th Royal Tank Regiment threatened Rommel’s armored columns, shrugging off attacks from German Panzers and light anti-tank guns, but finally ran up against the waiting 88 mm FlaK guns of 23 FlaK Regiment, 7. Panzer-Division.

The BEF attack faltered against the deadly accuracy and hitting power of the 88s, and the surviving Matilda's withdrew. With their failure died all hope of an Allied reprieve.

Conceived originally as an attempt to strengthen the British defense of Arras which was threatened by the extension of the German panzer corridor from the Meuse towards the sea, the Arras counter-attack turned into the most fruitful British operation of the 1940 campaign. The mobile element of the force deployed under General Franklyn (Frankforce) consisted of the 4th and 7th Royal Tank Regiments and the 8th and 6th Battalions Durham Light Infantry, divided into two columns with attached field and anti-tank batteries; its tank strength was 58, and it was led by one of Britains 'tank pioneers', G Le Q Martel. Moving east of Arras and southward with the aim of 'mopping up' Germans in the vicinity, its leading elements were surprised to find that the Germans were present in the area in great and organized strength. They, consisting principally of Rommel's Seventh Panzer Division and part of the SS Totenkopf Division, were most surprised to be attacked however, and reacted weakly and confusedly. Rommel only halted the tank incursion by employing the 88mm guns of his anti-aircraft regiment - among the earliest recorded uses of those subsequently dominant weapons in the anti-tank role - and reported that he had been attacked by 'hundreds of enemy tanks.' His own situation maps are marked to show five British Armoured Divisions. Despite Frankforce's eventual repulse, and the light losses to both sides, the attack played an important part in prompting Hitler to halt his Panzer groups outside the Dunkirk canal line and so allow BEF's escape.

France, July 1942. The U.S. Joint Planning Staff, studying the whole question of U.S. troop deployment, went much further. They believed that a considerable land attack could be launched across the English Channel in 1942. Although it would have to be done at first largely by British forces, American participation would build up rapidly, and the prospect of such reinforcement should enable the British to mount the attack on a slimmer margin than would otherwise be possible. On this basis, the planners outlined what they thought would be a possible operation to take place in the summer of 1942 with a D Day between 15 July and 1 August. The operation was to open with a fifteen-day air attack, the strategic purpose of which would be to divert the German Air Force from the east. The immediate tactical objectives were to establish control of the air over the Channel and at least a hundred kilometers inland between Dunkerque and Abbeville, and to inflict the maximum damage on German military installations and lines of communication. During the air offensive, commandos were to raid the coasts of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Normandy. In phase two, beginning about D plus 30, major land forces were to cross the Channel with the mission of securing the high ground north of the Seine and Oise Rivers, and of destroying enemy ground and air forces in the general area Calais-Arras-St. Quentin-Soissons-Paris-Deauville. The plan did not go into operational detail. The critical problem of landing craft received little attention beyond a listing of the barge requirements and a notation that both Americans and British would have to construct special craft.

1. SITUATION:

France, July 1942.

The U.S. Joint Planning Staff, studying the whole question of U.S. troop deployment, went much further. They believed that a considerable land attack could be launched across the English Channel in 1942.

Today.

American units have been tasked to secure a sector NW of Arras where a German garrison has been setup. The area is battle torn and there is a mine field between the Americans and the objective.

a. Enemy Forces.

1. The weather will be overcast with some chances of rain.

2. The field holds little concealment but it does have ample cover. There is a mine field that crosses Grid line B. The woods running along Grid line 4 do not have mines neither does the Ammo Depot at B2. Units may cross the mine field in these locations. There are 2 areas in which minesweeper units can de-mine the area. At B1 and B3 there are marked off fields that contain 5 mines each.

3. German Wehrmacht Regulars and well as some Waffen SS units are reported to have setup base in A1 sector.

4. Units are in force at the HQ in the A1 sector. Possible units in A4 sector as well.

5. German forces are trying to setup a 88 position at CP Alpha.

6. Units have high morale, and have light weapons only.

7. Axis units will likely try to either secure the defensive positions or rescue their units from the POW camp in sector C2.

b. Friendly Forces.

1. Destroy enemy ground and air forces in the general area Calais-Arras-St. Quentin-Soissons-Paris-Deauville and inflict the maximum damage on German military installations and lines of communication.

2. Friendly units are on both of our flanks and are securing their respective areas.

3. There are no fire support teams on station at this time.
